HOW TO MAKE a BEDROOM LOOK BIGGER

I believe that I've posted some tips on how to make a bedroom look bigger or maybe I'm thinking of the time that I decorated a teen girl's bedroom that had NO natural light and the moment I came home and posted ideas for how to brighten a dark room.

Well, if you read my post that I made earlier today before I went out shopping you know that I was craving fall colors. Or at least I thought it was the colors of fall that were on my mind. After being blasted with wind in my face that felt like it was straight out of a blow dryer on HOT, it came to me that open spaces with a cool breeze might just be the ticket to paradise.

After I left the mall, a decorator friend of mine had asked me to drop by to see (read: admire or rave about) a bedroom that she had just finished. When I drove up to the small ranch style home at the address she had given me My thoughts were, "How impressive could this be? The bedroom has got to be very small." I was right that the room was at best 12 feet square and the bedding was a solid color which was not exciting but she had a thing or two to show me about how to make a bedroom look bigger.

She had covered an entire wall (at least above the top of the bed) with a fabulous photographic wall mural that made the wall seem as if it had opened up and that you could literally step into the grove of trees. And guess what! There were my fall colors and I could almost smell the crisp, clean air and feel the leaves under my feet. The teen girls bedding set was nothing outstanding and there were no unique bedroom decorating ideas that jumped out at but in this room nothing more was necessary.

If you want to know how to make a bedroom look bigger the quick and easy way, I highly recommend one of these wall murals because they certainly give the illusion of wide open spaces and effectively fool the eye.

DECORATING THE BEDROOM-IDEAS for FALL

Today I'm pondering decorating the bedroom. Ideas for fall are on my mind even though the heat index is still 110 and better. I ask you, have I been obsessing over that far too much? Maybe I need to start turning the sound off on the weather channel so that I won't feel like my proverbial cheese may be sliding right off the cracker for feeling the urge to jump in and start bringing (read warm) fall colors into the decor.

Just so you know that I haven’t gone totally whacko...yet even when I decorate with the cool colors that I usually bring out for summer to counteract our scorching temperatures, my house literally screams FALL with the colors we have throughout including the bedrooms and the bathrooms.

Fall is my my favorite time of year to decorate and one of my favorite color combinations is PURPLE and ORANGE! I just love all of the warm colors even though decorating the bedroom and looking at ideas for fall in late August just makes me feel well...hotter.

What about you, are you looking for new girl bedding sets with a warmer look to them in fall colors or do you just keep the same comforter set in place until it becomes threadbare and you're sick to death of it?

TATTOO BEDDING

GO HERE FOR MORE!

What if your mom won’t let you have the tattoo bedding set that you want? I can’t say that I’m surprised to hear from some of the girls who come here for bedroom decorating advice that their mothers pulled the plug on their projects when they realized that their daughters were leaning toward skull bedding and the like.

This style of decor does take a little bit of getting used to if you can my drift. There’s not a lot I can do if your parents have really put their foot down and said that there will be no tattoo bedding for you, young lady.

hello kitty tattoo bedding comforter sheet set girls

But what I can do is point out some cute comforter sets that offer a bit of a compromise like the Hello Kitty tattoo bedding set for teen girls or a pretty bedding with teal blue birds on it and soft inspirational words like “Beautiful” and “Love” printed on banners floating over hot pink hearts on a field of white. You might even find butterflies on tattoo bedding and sheet sets if you try hard enough.

With some compromise, the distance between tattoo bedding Sets and tween girls bedroom decorating ideas can start to diminish before our very eyes!

PALM TREE COMFORTERS

embroidered palm tree pillow shams bedroom decor comforter

GO HERE FOR MORE!

Blast! All the palm tree comforters got scooped up in the collection I had been watching all summer. When I find a bedding set with palm trees on it that I like, I like to pick it up even if it gets stuck in the armoire or my overflowing storage trunk until I need it for a room that I’m working on. And if you think that I’m a crazy chick who has a huge pile of bedding stuck back threatening to create an avalanche every time the linen closet is opened, you would be wrong! Rarely do I have an inventory of over two sets because it’s practically impossible to decorate a tropical bedroom without using at the very least some accent pillows from my stockpile.

At the moment, I have a set of shams and some matching valances. While I was waiting for the bedding set to go on sale, somebody grabbed the comforter that I needed to go with them. They were not from the same set, but there are times when mixing and matching the various pieces (so long as the colors and styles are similar) is much more attractive than using perfectly coordinated pieces from a bed in a bag.

So, I’m off to my favorite discount bedding store at the outlet mall to see if I can rack up a few tropical design comforters for my stash because in the decorating world, palm trees are a staple item. How to Decorate a Bedroom on a Budget

GO HERE FOR MORE

Money is tight but your teenage girl's bedroom decor has become outdated; you need to know how to decorate a bedroom on a budget. Teenage girls’ tastes change almost as often as they change their outfits. Frugal decorating tips are needed for decorators in a financial pinch to easily accommodate the rapidly evolving trends.

THE WALL

When it comes to decorating a bedroom on a budget; paint is your friend. Painting the walls puts a whole new complexion on an area for a very cheap price. If your walls are already painted in a color that you can work with but there are a few damaged spots cover them with posters or some colorful wall decals specially designed for use in kids rooms.

FRUGAL FURNITURE

Refurbishing bedroom furniture to reflect the styles of the day is one of the best, inexpensive bedroom ideas we can offer. Paint that pencil post bed neon orange or electric blue and watch the way that your daughter’s eyes light up! What was shabby a minute ago can be made totally chic with some bright paint and imagination.

CHEAP BEDDING

Tween and Teenage girls’ bedroom sets can be flashy and fun without the expensive price tag. The key is to time your bedroom makeover for when you are most likely to have an excellent selection of complete bed ensembles offered at deep discounts. Sale shopping for bedding and floor covering will take a big bite out of the cost of your bedroom makeover.

There’s no definitive way to tell a decorator how to decorate a bedroom on a budget without knowing what style of décor they are working toward. The tips I shared in this article are very basic but should give you a good idea where to start cutting corners while still giving your teenage girls a bedroom they can be proud of.

ROXY BEDDING SETS for GIRLS-BEDROOM DECORATING IDEAS

ROXY BEDDING

GO HERE FOR MORE!

I was recently contracted to design a bedroom around a collection of Roxy bedding. for girls using a tropical floral design. The tropical print duvet cover fabric had a unique color scheme of red and brown with touches of oatmeal and tan which was not a combination that you might have pictured for a comforter in a Roxy comforter set called Coconut.

Normally I see bright pink, blue and yellow in varying shades when teen girls want to take their decor in an Hawaiian style of decorating. This unusual hibiscus flower print bedding collection was different in that I could picture lots of stained wooden accessories rather than the flower arrangements and glassware or ceramics that came to my mind when the teenage girl called me on my cell phone to tell me that she wanted a completely "Roxy Bedroom" and that she had already picked out a set of Roxy Bedding for girls. Coconut being the operative word here, because brown was the key to decorating this room successfully.

The decorating ideas that were put into practice for this bedding set were tropical but grounded in woven rattan and dark stained woods. The headboard for the bed was woven rattan which blended beautifully with the wide slats of the dark wood plantation shutter window treatments. Accent pillows in a textured fabric that was an oatmeal color with flecks of brown decorated the top of the comforter and a chocolate or mocha tailored bed skirt balance the break between the bold print fabrics and the hardwood floor.

The surprising thing was that once the room was completely decorated I saw that the bedroom could have just as easily worked for a boy as a girl it was so lacking in girly colors. The tropical print on the Roxy bedding for girls was all that saved the room from being overly masculine in design.

Most teens or tween girls might find this Roxy bedroom a little mature, but this teenage girl was very involved in the selection of decorative accessories and she loved the outcome. I found the room very sophisticated but it still managed to give off a casual feel. I couldn’t help but wonder how we could use the same set of Roxy bedding with lighter, brighter colors and some fun accessories like monkeys for a truly tropical bedroom. Maybe next time.

How to Choose the Best Teen Bedroom Sets

GO HERE FOR MORE!

A teen girl’s bedroom furniture and accessories are what make the difference between a run of the mill uninspired space and a funky, interesting and fun place to entertain and impress her friends. There are many fashionable designs out there and rather than make your bedroom makeover easier; the large selection might actually make your job more complicated. For instance, your tween might adore the Swedish modern dresser and then fall in love with a feminine canopy bed complete with carved cupids or angels flying across the headboard.

Before you set a date to take your daughter shopping for her stylish bedroom furniture, it would be advisable to pick up some teen magazines and see how her favorite teen celebrity’s bedroom is decorated. Maybe you can get some decorating ideas from the photographs regarding themes and color schemes.

BEDS FOR TEENS

The bed may be where you start this adventure into finding the perfect furniture for your teen girl. What you will be looking at is whether the funky headboard or the wild bedding set that's the standout and you should point this out to your child. When she screams and shouts that a particular bed is cute and to die for, you should ask exactly which part of the bed is tickling her fancy. Has the actual headboard and footboard caught her eye or is the bedding set?

SIZE

Take an inventory of the actual square footage and size of your teen girl’s bedroom. If you are decorating a small twelve by twelve bedroom with standard eight foot ceilings, that gorgeous set of bedroom furniture with a king size bed, an armoire, double dresser and two matching night stands that looked fantastic in the store may be disappointing once you get it home. Wall to wall bedroom furniture is only going to make your child’s room look tiny and cramped.
A better option would be a twin or double bed with one night stand and a tall chest of drawers to free up some floor space and give the visual impression that the room is bigger than it is.

STORAGE

Teenage girls love stuff. Stuffed animals, pompoms and photographs will clutter her bedroom to no end if not controlled. The top of the bureau may not have enough room to house all of her friends framed photographs and the teddy bears and bunny rabbits left over from her childhood, so while you’re shopping for your teenage girl’s bedroom furniture pick out some wall shelves that match to catch the overflow.

If lack of floor space isn’t an issue, you might want to add a table and chairs for a conversation area or a desk with a lamp so that your kitchen table will stay free of books and the contents of her backpack.

THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN MOTHER AND HER TEENAGE GIRLS

Keep your daughter in the loop. Bounce your favorite teen bedroom decorating ideas off each other and be open to what’s popular with the kids even if it sets your teeth on edge.

FURRY, FUNKY UPHOLSTERED HEADBOARDS

GO HERE FOR MORE!

The queston of how to make your own upholstered headboards came in some time ago. We were fortunate enough to be able to locate a wonderful DIY video with instructions on how to upholster with any number of cool fabrics that would be helpful in creating the funky teen decor of your fantasies.

There are many ways to guarantee that upholstery will be comfortable. You can do a tufting technique and over stuff it like a big stationery pillow, but the materials that you choose for your custom designed upholstered headboards plays a big part in the cozy factor of your girl's room. If the fabric is tough and hard as nails, no amount of filler or stuffing will compensate for the harsh texture.

Headboards are an excellent place to go wild and make a decorative statement. There are so many styles that are trendy and fashionable from mirrors to message boards. They can reach from the floor to the ceiling and be just as wide as your walls will allow. Don't restrain yourself; go crazy! There are few decorating rules and regularions for tweens, teens and pre teens bedrooms. These years are the most free spirited times in a girl's life and pink, faux fur covered headboards will be just as much at home in a stylish, Bohemian bedroom as it is with a sweet, polka dot bedding set and a gauzy white canopy designed in an ultra-feminine style.

TWEENS,TEENS and PRE-TEEN ENTERTAINING TRENDS

GO HERE FOR MORE!

Tweens and teen girls are entertaining. Where are they having their get-togethers with their friends? Since malls have started enforcing rules about hanging out in stores without adults, we see more and more of these young ladies at home. That's right, teenage girls are starting a nesting trend out of necessity.

The benefits are that their bedrooms are decorated as reflections of their own unique personalities and they are safe havens where they can have fun without the danger of pervs and the need to dodge dangerous street activities. With droves of chicks returning to the nest, mom and dad may be pressed to give what had previously been a space for getting the required number of hours of beauty sleep a complete makeover.

THE NEED FOR COOL HEADBOARD IDEAS!

GO HERE FOR MORE!

I may seem to focus primarily on finding the perfect set of cool bedding for modern teen girls in my blog entries, but I want to let my visitors know that I do pay attention to the whole decorating package. I take care to design bedrooms for tweens and teens with ideas that will catch the attention from the minute the bedroom door is opened.

Focal points on the walls, floors, ceilings as well as the bed itself are very important elements in the decor. What good is a funky comforter if the rest of the room is plain Jane? Let's narrow it down even more and say that the rest of the bed itself should not be without interesting appointments and design.

The bed frame is not an issue because the bed skirt or dust ruffle covers it completely in most cases. A sumptuous padded mattress cover is a lovely addition for reason pertaining to comfort and protection of the mattress more than appearance.
This brings us to the subject of headboards.

The headboard of the bed could almost be considered the bridge between bedroom wall decoration and the bedspread. There are many popular styles of headboard from bookcase to luxuriously upholstered headboards. The kind that is right for your little lady's room depends entirely on your taste. Go classic with iron or brass or make your own headboard with instructions from any number of free patterns and videos found online with very few tools or materials.

One of the most creative headboard ideas that I've seen for a pink and frilly girl's bedroom recently involved a set of large headboard stickers or wallies that I found at American Blinds, Wallpaper & More at less than twenty five dollars each! This would be perfect for a coed's dorm room or apartment where you didn't want to haul lots of heavy furniture up multiple flights of stairs!

DIAMONDS and STRIPES - A COMBINATION of TWO COOL WALL PAINTING TECHNIQUES

GO HERE FOR MORE!

Four walls covered in a bold diamond pattern might be a little bit overpowering even for a sassy teenage girl's bedroom wall decorations, so what's a decorator to do? I would say that if diamonds are to be a girl's BFF (best friend forever) the wall painting technique might benefit from a chair rail. You can use a faux chair rail that's been painted as a break at the right height or if you prefer a 3D effect, you can nail some wooden trim as it's not too expensive. If you want to do something funky and fun, you can hot glue some fake fur, feathers or beaded trim in coordinating colors. Silk flowers at regular intervals can be cool, too. It all depends on your bedroom color scheme or decor.

You can stencil your large wall diamond designs above or below the chair rail and then tone them down with painted stripes below the chair rail. So long as you keep the color combinations similar, you should be in good shape! Here's a cool decorating tip to add a little something special to your diamond pattern; at the tip of each diamond glue or nail in a decorative nail head. You can find lots of burnished silver, brass and gold nailheads to use at your local upholstery shop.

PAISLEY PATTERN BEDDING and DECORATING IDEAS

GO HERE FOR MORE!

Mixing and matching bedding fabrics has a way of making any duvet cover or comforter so much more exciting! First of all, it’s a real challenge to choose just the right balance of color, texture and design for a teen girls decor. A paisley pattern with all those funky, bold shapes and colors is no different.

Here are some ideas on how to decorate your teen or preteen girl's room with funky paisley motifs and designs using fabrics printed with different patterns and prints rather than solid colors.

You know from the beginning of this bedroom makeover that you will have to bring in a print with small designs that will provide a background for the dominant paisley fabrics.

Take inventory of the color scheme of the large paisley pattern. Paisley patterns are an eclectic hodgepodge of color, but which one jumps out at you? Whatever the answer to that question may be, that color will be used as accent colors in decorating the bedroom.

Now, what color seems to be the anchor or background in the paisley design? That’s the color you will use in your coordinating prints. An example would be that if your paisley bedding pattern has hot pink flowers with brown stems on a field of beige choose a fabric with a neutral brown print. Some examples of acceptable patterns would be gingham checks, polka dots, houndstooth or wild animal prints like the cheetah print in the pictures.
Consider how fabulous the hot pink paisleys will look beside the chocolate brown prints!

Pink and Green Bedding for Tweens and Teens

pink and green tween bedding sets

GO HERE FOR MORE!

Nothing is as fresh and pretty as a new set of pink and green bedding for a tween or teens bedroom. A patchwork quilt or comforter is stunning and not so country that your teen will object so long as you offer a color scheme that is appealing. Even if you rely on a retro paisly print or polka dots to sneak your favorite colors by your young lady, the result will be worth the compromise.

For a vintage feel, consider brushing the rust off of grandmother's old iron bed and giving it a modern look with some fresh white paint. If you don't have an authentic antique iron bed tucked away in storage, there are replicas that are just as good as the real article. If you shop carefully, you can find an ornate metal bed that's relatively inexpensive and fancy enough to provide a beautiful background for most any style of pink and green bedding that you desire.

Can Green in Teen Bedding Sets be Cool?

GO HERE FOR MORE!

Funky Geometrics and Acid Green Bedding

So, what are you going to do when your teen wants something funky and green? Green and funky don’t always go hand in hand. There’s jungle bedding that has lots of lush, green foliage and you might be able to stretch the description and call it wild, but funky and fun it’s just not.

Solid green? As big a fan as I am of the color green, there’s just something overpowering about a comforter in solid green. That’s just too much green to be considered cool no matter what colors or prints you pair it with.

The only fabric print at the moment that I can think of that might be green enough and yet funky enough to meet your teen’s approval would be bright green geometrics. Abstracts are bouncy and light-hearted and chock full of decorating possibilities. Pull one or two of the dominant colors from the print and go wild!

BALLERINA BEDDING and DECORATING IDEAS for TEEN and TWEEN GIRLS BEDROOMS

GO HERE FOR MORE!

Every teen girl had dreams of being a ballerina at one time in her young life. There's no better time to create ballerina decor than before your sweet girl becomes a little lady. I just don't see many pictures of ballerina theme bedrooms for tweens and teens decorated for girl's past the early teen stage. What a tremendous waste of beautiful ballerina fabrics and accessories!

hello kitty ballerina wallies wall decals ballet stickers

ballerina wallies wall decals ballet stickers

Make an elegant (and inexpensive) ballerina wall mural with these ballerina wall decals. The stickers are reusable vinyl and you can move them around for the next bedroom makeover!

If a complete duvet cover or comforter covered in ballerinas is just too froo froo or feminine for your diva, there are ballerina fabrics that bring in other motifs that will offset the tulle costumes and and rhinestone encrusted headpieces. One particular ballerina print that I like combines musical notes in black with the pastel pink background. Pink and black bedding is very popular with teenagers so run a length of that cloth by your little girl for approval!

Here's another ballerina dancer decorating tip. If your girl didn't get to have a ballerina themed bedroom before she considered herself way too mature as a teenager, decorate her bedroom in antique ivory, cream or white with a complimentary pattern like stripes with some ballerina artwork on the walls. Then design a powder room to feature your prints and wallpapers of ballet dancers! Dainty French slipper chairs and fluffy faux fur and feathers all will fit nicely into the most tiny powder room design. This is a really diplomatic way to slip in your ballerina fabrics for a girl old enough to think tutus are for babies! This pink beaded crystal lamp and elegant gold gilt chair don't shout Swan Lake, but they will fit right in!

Arrange some vintage ballerina figurines on the top of the powder room vanity to be reflected in the mirror to create space if your powder room is small. CHERRY BEDDING - BLOSSOMS and RED FRUITY FABRICS

Red, black and white are popular color schemes in lots of different bedding fabric patterns, but now I'm seeing black and white checks intermingled with lucious red cherries! Who would've ever dreamed that fruit print fabrics would migrate from kitchens to teen bedding? Any ideas on how to work with fruity teenage bedroom decorations?

Is the tropical headdress of the Copa Cabana coming back? Will we be decorating with bowls of bananas, grapes and cherries? Strange and just a little disturbing. I was always taught not to take food out of the kitchen!
