I believe that I've posted some tips on how to make a bedroom look bigger or maybe I'm thinking of the time that I decorated a teen girl's bedroom that had NO natural light and the moment I came home and posted ideas for how to brighten a dark room.

Well, if you read my post that I made earlier today before I went out shopping you know that I was craving fall colors. Or at least I thought it was the colors of fall that were on my mind. After being blasted with wind in my face that felt like it was straight out of a blow dryer on HOT, it came to me that open spaces with a cool breeze might just be the ticket to paradise.

After I left the mall, a decorator friend of mine had asked me to drop by to see (read: admire or rave about) a bedroom that she had just finished. When I drove up to the small ranch style home at the address she had given me My thoughts were, "How impressive could this be? The bedroom has got to be very small." I was right that the room was at best 12 feet square and the bedding was a solid color which was not exciting but she had a thing or two to show me about how to make a bedroom look bigger.

She had covered an entire wall (at least above the top of the bed) with a fabulous photographic wall mural that made the wall seem as if it had opened up and that you could literally step into the grove of trees. And guess what! There were my fall colors and I could almost smell the crisp, clean air and feel the leaves under my feet. The teen girls bedding set was nothing outstanding and there were no unique bedroom decorating ideas that jumped out at but in this room nothing more was necessary.

I can’t say that I’m surprised to hear from some of the girls who come here for bedroom decorating advice that their mothers pulled the plug on their projects when they realized that their daughters were leaning toward skull bedding and the like.

I have had to dream up a few rockstar bedroom decorating ideas for teenage girls in my day, but Taylor Swift bedroom decorating projects are unprecedented, at least until today. Usually tween and teen girls' demands for rock and roll bedding are met with bed in a bag sets with their favorite band's pictures on the comforter, framed wall posters and maybe some wallpaper border if the band is popular enough to have expanded its product line to include home decorations. But when my alarm clock went off this morning I had no clue that I was about to take rock and roll bedrooms to a whole new level. And surprisingly the bedroom's style had nothing to do with guitars or anything musical. The story of my introduction to Taylor Swift bedroom decor follows.

This morning I got a phone call from a desperate mother who begged for a consultation because she needed me to suggest decorations for a dorm room for her daughter. She had planned to do the job herself but had to leave town on business so she called me. I hesitated because this was going to put me in a bit of a scheduling bind and as I mentioned earlier, when I run behind schedule for one reason or another people tend to get angry and forget that they begged me to squeeze them in.

The lady on the phone could hear my reluctance and assured me that decorating her teenage girl’s bedroom would be the easiest job I ever took because her decorating ideas were taken directly from the Taylor Swift bedroom in her video "You Belong With Me". She said that her daughter wanted an exact copy of the bedding, the window treatments and the paint color. I remembered seeing a picture of Taylor Swift’s bedroom a few years back that had a bohemian look to it and I do so love to decorate bedrooms in a bohemian style so I finally told this frantic mom that I would take the job.

So, I headed over to watch the video on Youtube to see what decorative items I would need to decorate a bedroom Taylor Swift style and I quickly saw that this bedroom would be anything BUT Boho! The bedroom’s walls are painted lime green, with purple curtains and the bed and furniture were white wood. I’m not sure where they got the patchwork quilt on the bed but it was made from a combination of fabrics in non-descript colors and layered over striped tone on tone cream colored sheets. I suppose that the character that Taylor Swift was playing in the video was plain and frumpy (in the beginning at least) so the set designer decorated the bedroom to follow suit.

I looked on Pottery Barn Teens to see if I could find the exact quilt with no luck. However, I did find two or more that would work so much better with the lime green and purple that I hope that my client and her daughter will approve. One is the Graphic Pop quilt that is even pictured with a green wall similar to the one behind Taylor Swift in the video and the other one that I might present as a possibility has a tropical print. You will not get any argument whatsoever from me that the current leader in pink and black wallpaper for teenage girls’ bedrooms is polka dots. RETRO PEACE SIGN WALL DECORATING IDEAS

After finding several cool, retro comforter sets I began to wonder how to build more retro peace sign presence in my decorating projects. As I have mentioned before, there is more and more evidence that a slightly modern 60s flower power frame of mind is creeping into this decade.

First I will cut the heads off of large silk daisies (think Gerbera) and then I will stick the daisy blossoms on the wall of the bedroom in the shape of a large peace sign using adhesive. I could easily find some vinyl flower power and tie-dyed peace sign wall stickers but I would not have as much control over the color scheme plus the decals are one dimensional rather then the eye popping 3D look that the artificial flowers give me. I was about to come to the conclusion that if I wanted to decorate the walls in big, bold dots I would have to paint the polka dots on the walls myself. There are pros and cons with this process. The upside would be that you could paint the dots to fit the size of the room which is good in small bedrooms. Four walls covered in a bold diamond pattern might be a little bit overpowering even for a sassy teenage girl's bedroom wall decorations, so what's a decorator to do? I would say that if diamonds are to be a girl's BFF (best friend forever) the wall painting technique might benefit from a chair rail. You can use a faux chair rail that's been painted as a break at the right height or if you prefer a 3D effect, you can nail some wooden trim as it's not too expensive. In my opinion giraffe is one of the more unique wild animal prints and I wonder why it's not used more in teen girl's bedrooms. I was looking for some tween safari theme decorating ideas and came across the usual cheetah, zebra and leopard print bedding sets and BOOM I chanced upon some luxurious chocolate brown and gold giraffe bedding. My first thoughts were to wonder why on earth I had not designed a room covered in giraffe patterns before. I still might not advise using these earthy tones for a preteen, but older girls are demanding more and more sophisticated bedding for their daybeds in their dorm rooms as well as their beds at home. I have seen instructions for decorative painting techniques recently that involved stenciling the fabric of chair cushions. What a unique way to give plain old solid color pillows a makeover! You could take tiny portions of the stencil and paint Asian figures practically anywhere in the room! I especially love the idea of a few symbols in white on black satin accent pillows or black and red on white silk fabrics. How sexy would that feel, I want to know!

Funky Geometrics and Acid Green Bedding

So, what are you going to do when your teen wants something funky and green? Green and funky don’t always go hand in hand. There’s jungle bedding that has lots of lush, green foliage and you might be able to stretch the description and call it wild, but funky and fun it’s just not.

Solid green? As big a fan as I am of the color green, there’s just something overpowering about a comforter in solid green. That’s just too much green to be considered cool no matter what colors or prints you pair it with.

The only fabric print at the moment that I can think of that might be green enough and yet funky enough to meet your teen’s approval would be bright green geometrics.
